With his penchant for Victorian toy theaters and 19th-century ballerinas, Joseph Cornell is often presented as a singular, even eccentric artist caught up in a gauzy past. Taylor, however, sees the artist as resolutely modern and firmly engaged in his 20th-century world. A major new video work by Los Angeles artist Mike Kelley, Day is Done is a twisted semi-musical that examines American subcultures. Composed of 31 sketches, each a reconstruction of photographs was found in high school yearbooks, with such familiar events as dress-up days, memorial speeches, religious spectacles and fashion shows.
